Just like the seasons, hair trends tend to come and go. Naturally, that sets us on a continuous cycle of wanting to refresh and update our signature cuts. You might have seen ‘90s bobs and punchy copper colours trending of late, but according to an expert, the remainder of 2022 is all about Noughties throwbacks, shaggy styles and face-framing fringes.
To prepare ourselves for the cuts that await us for the rest of the year (and of course, to pre-book those salon appointments), we asked Jordan Thomas, ghd ANZ Education Manager, for the lowdown on the latest trends. Expect big, daring, throwback styles ahead.
Unsurprisingly, pop culture has had a serious impact on how we’ll be styling our hair this season — namely thanks to a little show called Euphoria… you might have heard of it?
“The Noughties' darker pop-punk aesthetics are creeping back in, spearheaded by shows like Euphoria and strutting down every major runway,” explains Thomas. “This is becoming prominent with what we’re wearing and goes hand in hand with how we are styling our hair in the second half of 2022.”
If you’re wanting to pull it off for yourself, Thomas says the key is to correctly prep the hair to “build the perfect foundation to work upon, partnering that with the correct styling tools for your desired results.”
As with our latest fashion choices, Gen-Z’s obsession with the Noughties is taking centre stage.
“Spurred by Gen-Z Noughties nostalgia, we're seeing influence taken from pop powerhouses like Gwen Stefani. We are seeing her signature bantu knotted hair and space buns from festivals around the globe; from Coachella to Glastonbury, and sure to be a feature at Byron Bay’s Splendour in the Grass.”
Basically if you have any upcoming festivals (or just looking to experiment), this one’s for you.
If you thought Miley Cyrus’ mullet cut was the end of the shag style, think again — shag and wolf cuts are making a big splash in the hair world this year, according to Thomas, describing the style as a “soft" and "wearable.”
If you’re hesitant but want to dip your toes into this daring style, Thomas says that “grown-out fringes are very much in and perfect for creating face framing, sweeping curtain bangs.”

To achieve maximum results, Thomas suggests using a round ceramic brush that is vented.

The ceramic retains heat from the dryer to allow for a faster blowdry experience whilst the hollow barrel and vents allow the airflow to travel through the brush giving you extra body and craft the dream airy finish.”
