You’ve got your summer jewellery sorted—a collection of colourful stones and pearls to match. But, what about the accessories for when winter really sets in? Because, as we know, most of our jewellery ends up bundled up and hidden amongst our knitwear and coats.

Believe it or not, there are actually a few tricks of the trade for layering jewellery when the cold temperatures come in stride. Melbourne stylist Angela Cleary says it comes down to a few simple techniques (that you'll want to know, stat). So, if you don’t want to put your accessories to the wayside during winter, take into account these key lessons.

Subtle Statements

Don’t be afraid to still stick with strong, yet subtle, statement pieces for the cold weather, with Cleary stating we’ll still see plenty of “bold and uplifting” jewellery this season. “Colour continues to lift our spirits with accents of jewel-toned adornments and bespoke classics like the signature ring or heirloom earrings are also on the radar,” she says.

Opt for styles this season that have a vintage edge, like ZAG Bijoux's Carla Ring or Mejuri's Signet Pinky Ring, all of which will stand out amongst your winter staples.

Play With Tonal Dressing

According to Cleary, you can never go wrong with the basics. “Always remember your classic tones such as creams, blacks, and beiges are timeless and are going to allow your jewellery items to speak and shine.”

But that doesn’t mean you can’t still be a little playful in your jewellery selections too. “Play around with tonal colour dressing," says Cleary. "Wear two shades of green such as an emerald green with an apple green, pair that back with a black boot, handbag, and belt then add your splash of gold with a statement earring or ring. That way you’re giving a nod to all the trends without looking messy or busy. It’s chic, colourful yet carefully curated.”

When Layering, Start With The Most Loved

When in doubt, Cleary says to stick to what you love. “My advice would be to start with a piece you love the most, the piece you want to stand out then add items around that which allow it to be the hero piece."

Another trick? It's about balancing out your pieces so they work in sync, says Cleary. "When layering earrings, it always looks aesthetically pleasing to go in order from smallest to largest. To be honest that’s a good rule of thumb when layering your rings too. Your aim is to add little details that pop."

Find The Brands You Love To Wear

One of the best pieces of advice, says Cleary, is to find the brands you truly love to wear. The stylist suggests some of the stunning designs from ZAG Bijoux, a jewellery brand inspired by the vibrance of Parisian life.

“I can’t take off my ZAG Inca earrings right now,” says Cleary. “They are delicate but add depth to my ear with a pop of colour. The Gerry ring is quite whimsical and ‘heirloom’ looking, which is always a good storyteller to finish your look. I also love the Maasai Earrings for glamour.”
