As we know, fragrance has the ability to uplift, inspire and enhance all of our special moments — and that notion sits at the core of everything Hannah Drury creates each and every one of her businesses, Burchgrove Home, Peppermint Grove, Mews Collective and Moss St. Fragrances. Whether it’s the brand’s signature soy candles in their stunning glass jars (which make the perfect home decor), spiral candles fit for the trending tabletop craze. diffusers, hand sanitisers or bath salts, you know that Burchgrove Home’s pieces will not just come with a delectable scent, but look impeccably chic and elevated too. As part of HER BLACK BOOK’s Festival of Her, a shopping event to support female-founded businesses, Drury shares some insight into her business journey so far.

“I was 24, a few years out of university and working long hours in a full-time position in a similar industry, and I realised I wasn’t okay with the fact that I was putting my blood, sweat and tears into someone else’s dream... I wanted to work for myself and do my own thing. So I did. There was a gap in the market for a highly positioned elegant offering with an Australian feel and dimension. I was passionate about developing a range featuring unique designs with fabulous fragrances that added to the aesthetics of the home.”

“Always stay focused on your brand, your vision and your product.”

“... and above all, conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.”

“The harsh reality is that business is tough! It’s hard work, long hours and filled with obstacles and steep learning curves. The glamorous moments are rare, the spotlight is only temporary. Always love the excitement, love the challenge and don’t forget to enjoy the ride."

“I pride myself on being a positive thinker. If something goes wrong whether it be in work or life, I don’t dwell on the negative. It’s all about learning from our mistakes, getting it done and moving on!”

“Comfort is key! I can’t go past a high-quality tee and classic linen pants. Travelling between our warehouse in Bowral and office in Sydney, I am always rocking a pair of white sneakers for ultimate comfort.”

“I love getting stuck into a good podcast on my way to Bowral or on a weekend walk. I am currently listening to ‘The Mentor with Mark Bouris’. His guests are particularly interesting and the topics discussed are always insightful, thought provoking and relevant. For something fun, inspiring and honest, I opt for listening to ‘Lady Brains’.”
