Each new year brings with it a whole host of fresh floral trends, and they can often be a little bit daunting to navigate. That's why, we asked the team at Fig & Bloom, one of Australia's leading florists, to layout exactly what's about to blossom in 2022, and there's lots to get excited about.
As always, the context of the years gone by have heavily influenced the direction in which flower lovers, customers and experts are enjoying blooms and plants this year. With this in mind, it’s hardly surprising that sustainability, seasonality, and texture sit amongst this year's top floral trends.
After two and a half years of the challenges that the pandemic has brought to us, flowers have arguably never been more important. Boasting beautiful colours and radiating positivity, whether in your own home or as a gift to a loved one, a bunch of blooms are a mainstay in interior trends.
Yet within the flower industry itself, we find that trends also echo current sentiments in society. A desire for adventure, renewal, flexibility, peace, and vibrance seem to be fuelling the curation of trends this year.
Want to make sure you stay ahead of the curve? We’ve rounded up our top 7 trends for the year ahead.
The dried flower trend blossomed back in 2020, but it’s not going anywhere. With sustainability at the forefront of many of our minds, these long-lasting, beautiful blooms are a great, guilt-free way to adorn our homes. Not only this, but they’re also super low-maintenance and come in a variety of colours, textures and shapes, so you’ll have no problem finding the perfect piece for your space. It’s not just the flowers themselves that are peaking in popularity, but grasses, branches, leafy foliage and even weeds, too.
If you’re looking for a great floral gift that will stand the test of time, look no further! The neutral Pinnacle design combines preserved leaves and flowers in this arresting display.
A fan of the foliage? It may be time to try something new this year. In 2022, it seems that swapping out the leafy greens for even more incredible blooms is the way to go. Layering flowers of the same colour, along a monochromatic scale, or even different colours is the new hottest arrangement trend.
With a huge emphasis on decluttering in interior and home trends, we can start to see why such fresh lines and simple looks of solo flowers on a stem have come into play this year. Yet there doesn’t have to be anything simple or boring about these stripped-back designs. While they may be less bulky, the designs can appear bold and bright, combining several flower styles, and performing at different levels. Try the Marseille design which unites sprinklings of gypsophila, bold stock flowers and delicate roses in a delicious fuschia-scaled delight.
Bold and brights are not only popular for foliage-free designs - they’ve been predicted as the star of the show for all bunches of blooms this year. As we move into the third year of the pandemic, colour favourites sit mainly on the warmer, optimistic end of the spectrum. It’s hoped that these brighter tones will lift our spirits, at home, work or in our favourite coffee spots.
Tropical hues sit safely at the top spot of trends this year. Golds, sky blues, and the colours of the rainbow that you’ll find adorning tropical fruits and flowers, as well as the glorious horizon at sunset - these should be your foundation this year. Pair with cooler tones and nutty, buttery neutrals to create contrast and allow those livelier colours to really shine.
The Cannes design allows the bright white neutrals of gypsophila, chrysanthemum disbuds and stock to melt into a perfect background for stunning coral pops of carnations and anthuriums.
It’s not only colour to build upon in designs this year. Shape and texture play an essential role in creating a full and interesting arrangement. Bunch ruffled edges, feathery feels, lacy styles and full, large petals into the same design. Arrange them loosely in a more laid-back style, or use certain styles to frame others, highlighting a clear star of the show.
And don’t be afraid to combine different trends into the same piece! Try vibrant pops of colour and layered texture for the perfect on-trend design. These ideas apply just as well to dried designs as fresh - think about how you might layer grasses and branches with dried petals.
The Prague design is a great place to start when it comes to texture. Chunky ranunculus meet long tapering snapdragons, delicate lisianthus, unique and interesting protea, all cradled in a wonderful magnolia foliage frame.
If the last two years have changed anything for us, focusing more on the space around us is certainly one of them. Having spent so much time surrounded by our home’s four walls, many of us are looking to improve our interiors and houseplants can play a huge part in this.
We know that being around nature can have a restorative effect on our wellbeing, so a great way to bring this into our lives is to welcome plants into our homes. Whether you let leafy greens be the linchpin of your design scheme, or simply complement your existing decor with a few plants here and there, it can only be a good thing for our overall health. And, they look great too!
As with colours, the emphasis this year is on the tropical. Opt for lush green plants like monsteras or philodendrons to stay completely on-trend.
Sustainability is becoming even more of an important consideration when it comes to shopping, and flowers make no exception. Not only are dried florals becoming more popular for this exact reason, but houseplants and seasonal blooms, too.
The traditional fresh cut flower industry has historically been criticised for its environmental practices, but there’s a lot that we can do to make sure that the blooms we enjoy displaying in our homes or gifting to our loved ones make as little of an impact on the environment as possible. Just as with grocery shopping, buying your flowers locally and seasonally goes a long way to helping this. You can also support your local community at the same time.
At Fig & Bloom, sustainability is a hugely important consideration for us - take a look at the measures we’re currently taking below.
Why not take shopping ‘local’ one step further and focus on plants and flowers that we find naturally in Australia? We’ve started to see a rise in appreciation for native species this year, with many displaying unique, beautiful flora and fauna in their homes and designs.
Australian native flowers are the star of the show in our wonderful Broome design. You’ll find the stunning cone-shaped banksia, eucalyptus, dusty miller foliage and perfectly pink paper daisies.
